European Jewish Congress President Kantor expresses concern about a Jewish future in Europe after release of FRA report on young Jewish Europeans.

(Brussels, Thursday, July 4, 2019) – European Jewish Congress President Dr. Moshe Kantor has expressed great concern over the results of a EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) report “Young Jewish Europeans: perceptions and experiences of antisemitism.”

Some of the results include four in five of the young Jewish Europeans say that antisemitism is a problem in their countries and believe it to have increased over the past five years. Younger Jews encounter harassment at higher rates than older generations, with 44% saying that they were targeted at least once in the past year.

The report also indicates that 41% have considered emigrating because they did not feel safe living there as a Jewish person, and 45% of young Jewish Europeans choose not to wear, carry or display distinguishable Jewish items in public because there are concerned about their safety.

In addition, 81% of the young Jewish Europeans declared the strength of their Jewish identity to be high.

“This report is of great concern because it clearly demonstrates that the position of our youth, the Jewish future of Europe, is tenuous at the moment,” said Dr. Kantor. “The fact that almost half are considering emigrating and will not display signs of their Jewish background point to a breakdown in their confidence to be both openly and proudly Jewish in their local environments.”

“However, the fact that over four fifths of European Jewish youths declare the strength of their Jewish identity to be high is certainly positive and means that despite the challenges, the next generation of Jewish leaders are motivated to maintain their Jewish identity, and this is certainly cause for significant optimism.”

The European Jewish Congress commends the European Union’s Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA), the European Commission, and the Institute for Jewish Policy Research (JPR), who was commissioned to carry out the report.

The study, at the initiative of the European Union of Jewish Students (EUJS), critically records the experience of antisemitism among young European Jews, who are all too often the target of escalating anti-Jewish hate on the continent, which is once again evidenced by this data.

The results relate to the 2700+ Jews aged 16-34 that took part in FRA’s survey of Jews in 12 Member States where over 96% of the EU’s estimated Jewish population live.

A bit confusing….So, are these young Jews about to emigrate en masse (French expression, just in case I might be forced to emigrate in France meself, but my commitment to Australian Jewry is far too strong, knowing full well that youse people could not possibly manage without me over here…), or are the same committed to strengthen their resolve and fight antisemitism all over Champs Elisee and environs !!!
I am not deriding a Report’s findings, but antisemitism in Europe currently is more than manageable. ALL European Governments can be trusted to take active part in combating all kinds of racism, including antisemitism, a reality which, if compared to what my parents did go through pre and during WWII, makes Europe of today a Yidischkeit little Gan Eden.
And, anyways, where are they all ( a few million) about to emigrate, because if to Israel, my contention is that, adding 2 million olim hadashim to the Jewish state just stam, may not help the Zionist cause much at all. May I suggest Romania, which, although geographically should be in Europe, trust me, she’s not quite there yet…Learning Romanian wouldn’t be all that hard, look at me, I am fluent in it and, if need be, I can give youse lessons, special discount for pensioners and Board of Deputies members with their annual fees/contributions up to date.
