Holocaust survivors speak of their ‘Hopes and Fears’ in a new video.

Jewish Care Victoria launched its video, ‘Hopes and Fears’, on 23 October 2017. ‘Hopes and Fears’ is the final video in the ‘Rising From the Ashes’ Holocaust documentary series which aims to highlight how the trauma experienced by Holocaust survivors transcends generations, impacting their children and grandchildren, and ensure we will never forget what happened.

The emotive video interviews Holocaust survivors who have a relationship with Jewish Care as clients, aged care residents, volunteers and donors. In the video, the Holocaust survivors discuss their hopes and fears, both for future generations, and for the world in which they live.

A prevailing theme throughout the video is that the past should guide the actions of future generations. As Holocaust survivor Henri Korn said in the video,

“We had hoped that what we lived through would be a lesson for the future; it has not.”

Another recurring theme is that the fears held by the survivors are not for themselves, but for the younger generations.

“I’m not worried about myself, I’m not worried about my wife, I’m worried about my children and grandchildren,”

said Holocaust survivor Henry Salter.

Other videos in the series, ‘The Greatest Loss’ and ‘Strength to Survive’, have been accepted by Yad Vashem (The World Holocaust Remembrance Center) to be included in their collection of films in The Visual Centre.

Jewish Care connects with thousands of survivors living in Victoria through the Holocaust Survivor Support Program and other community services, which addresses their needs in areas such as home and personal care, socialisation, counselling, housing support and assistance to receive restitution pensions and payments. The Program receives funding from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (‘Claims Conference’).
