Letter from & answer to the American Jewish Committee. (AJC)

Following is a letter I received from the AJC.

Dear   ?   ,

At the height of the Civil Rights Movement, the famed Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel joined the march from Selma to Montgomery. When asked how he found time to pray, he famously responded,

“I prayed with my feet.”

This weekend, Jews across the country once again prayed with our feet—alongside members of every faith and ethnic group—protesting the outrageous new presidential Executive Order on immigration and refugees, an action that would ban desperate refugees from war-torn majority-Muslim countries.

America is a nation of immigrants. And the Jewish people know what it means to be refugees—forced from our homes, fleeing death and persecution in search of safety and opportunity.

That’s why we must now not only pray with our feet, but with every fiber of our beings.

One immediate thing you can do is write to your members of Congress through AJC’s Action Center.  Urge them to speak out against—and take legislative action to rescind—these un-American and counterproductive measures against refugees and immigrants.

This will take you only one minute, but those affected by this unwarranted and unjust policy need our sustained support.

Now is the time to stand up for the values we hold dear. Stand strong, and know that AJC stands with you.

Thank you for your advocacy,

Jason Isaacson
AJC Associate Executive Director for Policy

Here was my answer. I think Jews in America have become smug and arrogant. (But I left that out.)

Dear Jason

A friend sent me your plea.

I am a Jewish mother of three and Savta of nine.  I am a proud advocate for Israel and the ethic that our people brought into the world more than 3500 years, ago.  This ethic is revolutionary and extraordinary-miraculous one could say.  Our people have been hunted for thousands of years because of that ethic and the accusation of Killing Christ and now we hear calls from the Muslim world-Kill The Jews and Death to Israel.

I am sure you are aware that there are more than 7 billion people in the world, 1.6 billion Muslims and we are now up to 15 million souls-still not back up to pre-Shoah levels.  And you want Jews to tell the President of the United States to revoke an executive order that is similar to the one that President Obama evoked.  Verifying people coming in to America. Many of these people bring with them their hatred for our people.

Do you think they will love us once they are here? At the very least do you not want to be assured that people coming here are prepared to be tolerant of the Jews?

Why is this any different from the order from President Obama?

Did you contact all the Jewish people then and tell them to contact their politicians?

This is a moratorium.  Why is this not acceptable?  Coming to American is not a right.

Are you aware that Kuwait has banned Muslims from 5 Muslim countries?

Do you plan to march against that?

Is it not better to find refuge in a country close to home with similar values than be shipped thousands of miles away?

Did you protest when Muslim countries-especially the wealthiest-refused to care for their Muslim brothers and sisters?

Or do you only protest President Trump?

Are you aware that religious leaders in Europe are now questioning the burgeoning Muslim populations that are tearing away at the Judaeo/Christian ethic that underpins all democracies?

Did your raise your voice when President Obama refused to cross his red line and allow Assad to kill his own people with gas?

Or do you only protest President Trump because you are a Democrat?

What have you done to protect the few remaining Yazidis and Christians from these areas?

Did you protest when Obama refused to veto UN resolution 2334 that turned Jerusalem into the Holy Muslim City and made the Jewish people occupiers of our own land?

Did you complain when Obama interfered in the elections in Israel?

Did you stand up and roar when Obama tried to secretly give Arabs 221 million dollars as he left the White House?

Did you complain about the Iran deal?

Do you cry over the attacks on our Jewish children across campuses in America?

Have you fought against BDS?

I suggest that you take time to put President Trump’s actions into context before you continue to demonize him. This is not Nazi Germany.  He is not Hitler despite the attempts to portray him that way.  He is the one leader in the Western world ready to stand up and protect Israel; Am Yisrael;  and you are attacking him for a moratorium on refugees from countries where verifying identities is extremely difficult and far too many people call for our death.

Let us remember the wise words of Rabbi Hillel.

“If I am not for myself who is for me?

Sir, Jason, Stop behaving like an idiot. You are most likely not a supporter of Trump and a person who is yet to except the election result. In 1974/5 I worked for the Sir Robert Muldoon leader of the New Zealand national party win an election with a landslide win in November 1975. I followed this in 1978 working for Lady Margaret Thatcher when she first won a landslide victory. These two experiences and others since, here and in Australia made it perfectly obvious that he was going to win from the second Primary debate.
Don’t be so high and mighty, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and lots of other countries are Immigrant nations. We control who comes into our countries, just as the USA does. So what Trump has done is nothing unusual and not unamerican. He said he would change the methods used in screening refugees and others who may be security risks to people in the USA. He is doing things differently so get used to it.

I will not support organizations that support Sanctuary Cities. So the US based funds that I have a say in will not be going to the ADL until its CEO pulls his head in and promotes upholding of the Law. The money instead will go to groups in Israel and maybe to UN Watch. It’s not a large amount but it is charitable funds.
Just for the record India is the biggest Moslem country in the world. Sunni and Shite’s are the 2nd and 3rd biggest faiths after Hindu’s. Indonesia comes a long way behind India in numbers.
I am not a Jew. I have been a long time supporter of Israel and have been involved in campaigning against UNSC 2334. You can read what I have had published on the Hawkes bay Today and New Zealand Herald web sites look for the headline Direct negotiation the best way.
    not my choice of Headline.
I stand on my record as a supporter of Israel since 1970.
By the way my family arrived in New Zealand from northern Ireland in 1865.

I have added a link to contact the organisation. Your comment was excellent and you should also send it to Jason Isaacson.

  2. I applaud your response Dianne!

  3. As we remember the wise words of Hillel, let us remember all of them. “If I am not for myself; who will be for me. If I am only for myself; what am I. And if not now; when.”

The liberal strand of or tradition tries to elevate the 2nd and ignore the first.
The conservative strand tries to claim primacy for the first while ignoring the second.

When what is being demanded of us is to seek the balance between them.

Now would be a good time.

That said. I love seeing the two letters side by side. In my view this dialog epitomizes the search for that balance.
