Latest News : Johansson stepping down as Oxfam ambassador

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Scarlett Johansson is ending her relationship with a humanitarian group after being criticized over her support for an Israeli company that operates in the West Bank.

A statement released by Johansson’s spokesman Wednesday said the 29-year-old actress has “a fundamental difference of opinion” with Oxfam International because the humanitarian group opposes all trade from Israeli settlements, saying they are illegal and deny Palestinian rights.

“Scarlett Johansson has respectfully decided to end her ambassador role with Oxfam after eight years,”

the statement said.

Oxfam tiny“She and Oxfam have a fundamental difference of opinion in regards to the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement. She is very proud of her accomplishments and fundraising efforts during her tenure with Oxfam.”

Earlier this month, “The Avengers” and “Her” actress signed on as the first global brand ambassador of SodaStream International Ltd., and she’s set to appear in an ad for the at-home soda maker during the Super Bowl on Feb. 2.

SodaStream has come under fire from pro-Palestinian activists for maintaining a large factory in an Israeli settlement in the West Bank, a territory captured by Israel in 1967 and claimed by the Palestinians.

In response to the criticism, Johansson said last week she was a

“supporter of economic cooperation and social interaction between a democratic Israel and Palestine.”

Oxfam took issue with Johansson, noting it was

“considering the implications of her new statement and what it means for Ms. Johansson’s role as an Oxfam global ambassador.”

Oxfam tinyJohansson had served as a global ambassador for Oxfam since 2007, raising funds and promoting awareness about global poverty. In her role as an Oxfam ambassador, she traveled to India, Sri Lanka and Kenya to highlight the impact of traumatic disasters and chronic poverty.

Oxfam representatives did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

  1. Leftist Org.Jewish Aid has been supporting OXfam for years notwithstanding Oxfams widely known reputation for their anti -Zionist stance and Palestinian activism.

    Jewish Aid endorses Oxfam

Why would you support leftist Jewish Aid with out really knowing where your donations would end up ? Surely Magen David Odom would be a much better option .

Thank the Lord for a woman of principal, congratulations to SodaStream for all they have done for the local Palestinians and their contribution to peace in the Middle East and shame on Oxfam!

Ms. Johansson, I wish you further success in everything you undertake in life. You deserve it!

  3. Many so called “human rights “Organisation are followers of the Hitlerite 1930 Nuerenberg anti Jewish laws. As the 3 wise monkey they se no evil, they hear no evil & they speak no evil against the Arab evildoers. They protect the worse scum in current world. They are but a sad joke.

    She’s a brilliant person.
She’s a role model for people who want to be intellectually independent rather than herd followers; she’s a role model for those people who seek and work for genuine justice.
May others in her profession be inspired by her and not by the likes of some of the warped people who love to ACT as if they are righteous, but are actually mere shadows on the stage which they create for themselves.

Incidentally, who is NOT going to pay to see Emma Thompson’s latest movie? Goodonya if you aren’t. I wonder how much of her earnings goes to shall we say “less than worthy causes.”

  6. Yes, I think that we all feel pretty good about Scarlett Johansson this morning.

I remember when I first learned that she was Jewish.

I do not think that my eyebrow could have been arched any higher!
